Family Car Safety Check

Look Before You Lock

Summer is here, and the heat can be intense. With busy schedules, it is easy to get distracted, but it is very important to “Look Before You Lock”. Every year, heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash-related fatalities for children 14 and younger. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be extremely dangerous.

At Curry’s Collision, we care about our community and want to share simple tips to keep children and pets safe this summer.

Key Tips to Remember

  • Check the back seats every time. Always look behind you before locking your car and walking away.
  • Use a visual reminder. Keep a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat when it is empty. Move it to the front seat whenever your child is in the back.
  • Communicate with caregivers. If your routine changes or someone else is driving, make a quick call to confirm that your child arrived safely.

What to Do if You See a Child in a Hot Car

If you notice a child alone in a hot vehicle, act quickly. Every minute counts.

If the child is unresponsive or in distress:

  1. Call 911 immediately.
  2. Remove the child from the vehicle.
  3. Spray the child with cool water avoid ice baths.

If the child is responsive:

  • Stay with the child until help arrives.
  • Ask someone to find the driver or request the facility to page them.

Summer Safety for Pets

The same rules apply to pets. Never leave dogs or other animals unattended in a hot car. Use reminders and check before locking the vehicle to ensure all furry friends are safe.
